Mission:
to help under privileged children,
families, and communities across Guatemala in areas of healthcare and education.

  Today's Focus

Improve education, healthcare and shelters near hospitals in Guatemala

Education

Guatemalan youth literacy rate:
85% of men and 72% of women (Unicef).
The regional average in Latin American and the Caribbean is 92%.

Even though the number of illiterate youth in Guatemala has declined over the years it still remains below the regional average, the education is substandard and the gender disparity persist.

Elementary education in Guatemala is free but the lack of funds for books, clothing, educational materials and transportation makes attending school impossible for many.

Friends of Guatemala provides financial assistance for building improvements,  scholarships and supplies to public and parochial schools.

Health

Several public hospitals and clinics in Guatemala  lack medical equipment and basic supplies.

Friends of Guatemala has provided:
  • respirators
  • mammography machines
  • incubators
  • cardiac monitors
  • surgical equipment
  • laboratory equipment
  • dialysis machines
  • hospitals beds
  • medications and
  • supplies.
Medical missions are also organized to bring medical care to underserved areas in Guatemala. During every mission more than 500 persons receive medical care.

Community

For many villagers it is a long trip and many waiting hours to see doctors.

At our shelter homes or “albergues temporales” we provide clean and safe overnight shelter, meals and bathrooms.

The "albergues" are located near Guatemalan hospitals. An average of 800 people are housed and fed, for a limited time, each month.

There is a constant need for maintenance and improvements. Every donation is not too small or large to help these families.
